Fire Light
a blog about all things fire from the Dove Creek volunteers
9/5/2021 0 Comments Fire Chief Sontos Hello neighbor,
As we start a new year at Dove Creek VFD we would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has helped support us through 2023. It’s through the support of our fellow neighbors that we were able to accomplish so much. This past year saw a lot of new and exciting things come to fruition for our department. We were able to start the year by purchasing a “new to us” fire engine. This was a huge step for the department as we have never had a fire engine of this capability or caliber before. We were also able to upgrade our SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) packs. These new upgraded packs will allow our firefighter to function longer and safer inside of structure fires. Along with the pack, we were able to secure a grant that allowed us to purchase a refill station for the bottles. This allows us to refill our packs locally right after use. Another major grant we were able to secure was for new Fire gear. Our previous gear went out of date and our members were in need of new gear that will allow them to not only fight fire safer but train safer as well. One of the things we are most proud of is that this past year we were able to provide Pondarosa Estates sub-division with a large water storage tank. This is a huge deal as there was not an adequate source of water for fire suppression locally for the residents. We hope to find ways to provide the same tanks for other areas we cover. These were just a few of the things we were able to accomplish this past year with your help. As we move forward into 2024, we look to keep growing and providing continued service to our citizens. To do this we need your continued help. The Dove Creek VFD is a 100% volunteer department. Our volunteers, many of whom do not live in the community, serve and train solely for the purpose of helping others. As you can imagine it cost quite a bit to maintain and upgrade our equipment every year. Not to mention, we provide workman’s comp and accident and sickness insurance for our members. We are on average provided approximately $9500 a year from the county and although this is a huge help, this is used almost solely for insurance. We raise money all year to help provide the services you have come to expect and deserve from our department. We ask for your support again this year to keep upgrading and moving forward as a department. We know times are tough and any donation you’re able to provide was hard earned. Please know that as a department we strive to make sure to be fiscally responsible with all which we are blessed with. Every time you see our members responding to calls for help, you are a part of that. We thank you for your continued support and may God bless you and your family. Sincerely, Sontos Chavez Fire Chief DCVFD
